The Smart Landscapes studio offers design solutions for landscapes and outdoor spaces for communities, municipalities, government agencies, and non-profit entities such as land trusts, schools, churches, and nature centers.  Our solutions improve quality of life through designs that enhance how people experience their neighborhoods, parks, historic sites, playgrounds, downtowns, and natural areas.  We enter the design process in partnership with our clients, emphasizing sustainability while maintaining a practical, real-world approach to exploring possibilities and defining our client’s vision to culminate in a solution that meets needs and exceeds expectations.

The Smart Landscapes studio specializes in:

  • Master planning and concept design
  • Community engagement and meeting facilitation
  • Recreation planning including nature-based playgrounds
  • Universal design for inclusive, accessible environments
  • Therapeutic and restorative garden design
  • Stormwater management, stream health, and natural area design
  • Sustainable design with native plants and low-impact materials

Elise Cormier PLA | Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning, Community Engagement

Our principal, Élise Cormier, is a Georgia native with over a decade of professional experience in consulting and design.  She is a Landscape Architect registered with the States of Alabama and Georgia, with dual degrees in Landscape Architecture and Natural Resources.  Élise began her Georgia experience with an Atlanta-based urban design firm where she specialized in public recreation planning.   Highlights of this early experience include designing the Rockmart-Cedartown section of the Silver Comet Trail and the first 3 miles of Atlanta’s BeltLine, a premier greenway project which is among the largest urban redevelopment programs in the United States.

Élise is a trained facilitator with the National Charrette Institute, and carries certification with the National Parks and Recreation Association as a Playground Safety Inspector.  Élise holds a Level II Designer certification with the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission.

Smart Landscapes facilitates public meetings and “design nights” to assist clients in gathering consensus from stakeholders to move forward on community initiatives.  In addition to improving public spaces and educational landscapes, Smart Landscapes has designed multiple wildlife sanctuaries for landowners in keeping with guidelines published by the Atlanta Audubon Society and Georgia Native Plants Society.  She lectures regularly with community organizations in both Georgia and Alabama, and is an invited speaker at the South Georgia Native Plant and Wildflower Symposium (UGA-Tifton), Park Pride Conference (Atlanta), and State Conference of Master Gardeners (Georgia).  Élise currently serves as a lecturer with the National Garden Clubs, Inc.’s Landscape Design School, and as adjunct faculty for the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at Auburn University.   Interested in Elise speaking to your group?
